Kallang is a central, busy town with older HDB estates, newer housing, industry and waterways. It is close to the city, but it is not uniformly quiet. Main roads, expressways and event crowds affect some pockets more than others.
Getting around
PropertyMarket's records list seven MRT stations in Kallang: Bendemeer, Boon Keng, Geylang Bahru, Kallang, Lavender, Stadium and Tanjong Rhu. Kallang and Lavender are on the East-West Line. Bendemeer is on the Downtown Line, while Boon Keng is on the North East Line. The records also list 118 bus stops.
The best station depends on the block and the direction of travel. Check the walking route itself. A route that looks short on a map may still involve busy roads or crossings.
Food and markets
The records list seven hawker-centre or market entries. They also list 28 coffee shops, six food courts and 16 supermarkets, including Cold Storage, FairPrice, FairPrice Xtra, HAO Mart, Prime Supermarket, Sheng Siong and U Stars.
This gives residents several options for cooked food and regular groceries. The nearest choice still depends on the block, so check the route and road crossings before buying.
Health care
Kallang's records include KK Women's and Children's Hospital, two polyclinics, and 14 clinics or other healthcare places. The two polyclinics are Kallang Polyclinic and Kallang Polyclinic And Long Term Care. Check the actual journey for appointments, especially if you need help with mobility.
Parks and places to walk
The records list 13 parks or park spaces, excluding one playground entry, and nine park connector entries. They include Kallang Riverside Park North, Kallang Riverside Park East, Kallang Park Connector and Stadium PC.
These routes suit residents who like walking or cycling. Visit the route near a potential flat to check its shade, crossings, noise and evening activity.
The flats
Kallang has a wide range of HDB blocks, so age, layout and surroundings vary between streets. Check the remaining lease, lift access, corridor condition and noise from roads or event areas. HDB's block-level service can confirm whether HIP, LUP, NRP or another upgrading or redevelopment programme applies to a particular block.
What is changing
URA plans to revitalise the Kallang River with community nodes, public spaces and better recreational links. Its Kallang Alive plan also aims for a more walkable, car-lite sports precinct. These are plans, not finished amenities. Building work and more visitors may affect nearby blocks while the plans develop.
Who it suits
Kallang suits buyers who value a central location, several MRT choices, many local food and grocery options, nearby healthcare and access to parks or park connectors. It is less suitable for someone who wants a quiet suburban town, low traffic or no event-related crowds.
