Living in Bukit Merah

A central, varied town with old Tiong Bahru flats, busy markets, many MRT stations and established parks.

Bukit Merah is a broad town made up of Tiong Bahru, Redhill, Alexandra, Telok Blangah, Bukit Purmei and Depot Road. It includes some of Singapore’s oldest public housing as well as newer estates. Its roads, hills and estate layouts differ greatly by neighbourhood.

Getting around

The records list nine MRT stations, including Redhill, Tiong Bahru, HarbourFront and Telok Blangah, plus 176 bus stops. Main-road traffic can be loud. Check the route from the lift to the bus stop, including slopes, crossings and shelter.

Food and markets

The records list 14 hawker centres, 52 coffee shops, 7 food courts and 17 supermarkets. Examples include ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre, Tiong Bahru Market and Alexandra Village Food Centre. Popular centres can be crowded, so visit on an ordinary weekday to judge queues and traffic.

Health care

The records list Bukit Merah Polyclinic and Outram Polyclinic, as well as Singapore General Hospital and Outram Community Hospital. They also list 29 clinics or other healthcare places. Check the journey from the exact block.

Parks and places to walk

The records list Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Labrador Nature Park, the Rail Corridor and Tiong Bahru Park. They also list five park connectors, including Alexandra Park Connector and Henderson Park Connector. The hill sections can be demanding, so try the route yourself if mobility is a concern.

The flats

Lease age and block history need close attention here. HDB records Tiong Bahru SIT flats from the 1930s to 1950s, Redhill Close and Alexandra North estates from the 1950s, and many post-fire flats from the 1960s. Check the exact lease, lift arrangement, corridor condition, parking and HIP history.

What is changing

Bukit Merah is under the ROH programme, with plans for refreshed centres, greener links and new housing. HDB also plans Berlayar as an extension near Labrador Nature Reserve and the Southern Ridges. Gillman Barracks is being studied for housing with ecological and heritage measures. No confirmed completion year is given for these changes.

Who it suits

Bukit Merah suits a buyer who values central access, markets, healthcare and established parks. It is less suitable for someone who wants a uniform, quiet estate or a flat with no hills and no nearby construction. The right choice depends heavily on the sub-area and the exact block.
